2011 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Marvin Austin, DT, North Carolina

by Cory J. Bonini on April 20, 2011 @ 14:54:45 PDT

North Carolina senior defensive tackle Marvin Austin is one of the most talented but enigmatic prospects in the 2011 NFL Draft class.

Austin last played in 2009, recording 42 tackles, 4.0 sacks and a forced fumble.

Strengths

  • Size (6-foot-1 5/8, 309 pounds)
  • Upper-body strength (38 bench press reps)
  • Inconsistently used leverage well
  • Marvin Austin, draft prospect
    Will attitude problems cost him?
Good first step and initial burst
  • Awareness against the pass - attempts to block passing lanes
  • Laterally agile and quick enough to move down the line
  • Hustles to the ball carrier
  • Breaks down well in space - impressive balance and body control
  • Positional versatility - 3-4 end or 4-3 tackle

Weaknesses

  • Overly aggressive - tries to jump the snap count too often
  • Caught up in a scandal for accepting benefits from an agent - kicked off the team
  • Reputation for having a selfish attitude and being immature
  • Lacks discipline for his assignment
  • Inconsistent
  • Plays too high at times

Expected draft placement

A high-risk, high-reward prospect, Austin has first-round talent. He might not make it out of the round, but a second-round selection is far more likely given his troubled past and maturity concerns.
