2011 NFL Scouting Report: Brooks Reed, DE/OLB, Arizona

by Cory J. Bonini on April 12, 2011 @ 00:16:54 PDT

Arizona senior defensive end Brooks Reed will look to make the move to outside linebacker after he is selected in the 2011 NFL Draft.

Reed has compiled 17.0 career sacks (7.0 last year) in his time with the Wildcats. He is coming off a career-best 47-tackle effort in 2010.

Strengths

  • Good straight-line speed (official 4.65-second 40-yard dash)
  • Experienced - three-year starter
  • Excellent intangibles - hard worker, fierce competitor and intelligent
  • Special teams prowess
  • Brooks Reed, draft prospect
    Rising up draft boards
    Has a strong bull rush
  • Positional versatility (Tampa 2 end or 3-4 rush 'backer)
  • Plays with controlled aggression and shows consistent discipline
  • Effective wrap-up tackler
  • Has a nose for the ball

Weaknesses

  • Choppy movements - not very fluid
  • Limited upside - 24-year-old rookie
  • Limited pass-rushing repertoire
  • One-trick pony? Rather limited and uninspiring in pass coverage
  • Has to transition from being a defensive end to an outside linebacker

Expected draft placement

Reed could be a second-round selection later this month, but a third-round placement isn't unfair or even to be unexpected.

He has recently met with or worked out for the Atlanta Falcons, Washington Redskins, Indianapolis Colts, Minnesota Vikings, New England Patriots, Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills
