KFFL's staffers choose their favorite 2011 fantasy baseball veterans.

The what for
Derek Jeter
SS
NYY
Barren SS class keeps him afloat. Still expect R, SB, Captainy stuff. BA recovery good bet. If Pujols is The Machine, Kevin Long is The Mechanic.
Vladimir Guerrero
DH
BAL
Impaled last year and moves to another fortunate sitch. 2H correction reminds us of downside, but still enough skills left in stick to prolong productivity.
Manny Ramirez
OF
TB
BSOHL? Work ethic always there. Injury-marred 2010 made most forget HOF plate skills. Added motivation: facing BOS, NYY. Value in deep OF setups.
Hideki Matsui
DH
OAK
2H BA bump shows there's something left. LHP befuddled him, but he remains cheap, middle-of-order, 20 HR bargain. AL-only difference maker.
Kyle Farnsworth
RP
TB
In SV picture vs. injured, rookie or inexperienced options. Refined arsenal, skills when competing for 2010 SP job. K/9 alone a fantasy aid.

The what for
Vladimir Guerrero
DH
BAL
I know he's old, but he can still hit a ball thrown anywhere near the dish. Don't expect last year's numbers, but Camden another hitter's park.
Manny Ramirez
OF
TB
Seems to be a comfy fit with Joe Maddon and his old buddy Johnny Damon. Injuries responsible for fade last year. Still has the skills to hit.
Magglio Ordonez
OF
CWS
Ankle snap last year has made Magglio a forgotten man. Can still hit for BA, although power is waning. Hitting in front of Miggy Cabrera doesn't hurt.
Koji Uehara
RP
BAL
Showalter knows he can close. Kevin Gregg isn't the most reliable ninth-inning stopper. Saves will come to Koji.
Kyle Farnsworth
RP
TB
Although not a sexy pick to finish games, he doesn't have much competition in TB. Two new pitches should help his effectiveness.

The what for
Bobby Abreu
OF
LAA
Model of health; 15-15 potential for the old guy - about as safe as you can get for someone of his age.
Javier Vazquez
SP
FLA
Improved park and decent rebound potential; loss of velocity discouraging but is hardly a death sentence.
Manny Ramirez
OF
TB
Uninspiring but still a solid contributor; .295 average with 20 HR not unrealistic if healthy.
Vladimir Guerrero
DH
BAL
OF eligibility to some; BA contributor with enough pop to make a difference.
Jim Thome
DH
MIN
Age is showing but still has enough power to be relevant in mixed leagues; PT vs. righties a plus.

The what for
Derek Jeter
SS
NYY
Way too much respect here. I'd lay it on the line for a player with his intangibles, if he asked, and I'd put him on my fantasy team, if you didn't.
Scott Downs
RP
LAA
The underappreciated southpaw is in good position to put up more great ratios and endear himself to a skipper begging for some reliability late.
Hideki Matsui
DH
OAK
Becoming overlooked on a club with serious potential to win AL West. A's pieced together roster that gives Godzilla another crack at .280-20-80.
Kyle Farnsworth
RP
TB
Long-term overhaul of his approach to pitching has made believers of no one outside Rays (and my LABR team). It's cheap to play for prize.
Lance Berkman
OF
STL
I'm a pseudo-fan of anyone who can buy plenty of WD-40 because Cardinals duped themselves into giving Tin Man knees $10 mil to play RF.
