The Carolina Panthers will hold a private workout for Auburn QB Cam Newton next week, according to Darin Gantt, of the Rock Hill Herald. The Panthers, who own the first pick in the NFL Draft, have admitted Newton is part of a group of players they're considering with that pick. Head coach Ron Rivera said he also expects to have Newton come to Charlotte to meet with team officials before the draft. Rivera talked at the NFL Scouting Combine about the need for a franchise quarterback.

QB | Mark Sanchez | New York Jets | Injury, Fantasy
New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez (shoulder) threw to prospects at the University of Colorado's Pro Day Wednesday, March 9, reports Michael David Smith, of ProFootballTalk.com. Sanchez was throwing to prospects, including WR Scotty McKnight, who also happens to be a close childhood friend. "He's pretty good, man," Sanchez said. "I think he's like a (New England Patriots WR) Wes Welker. He's smart. He studies. He knows football really well. He definitely has a coach's feel for the game."


Running Back

California RB Shane Vereen said he spoke with Oakland Raiders running backs coach Kelly Skipper during the NFL Scouting Combine, according to CBSSports.com. Vereen could be a possible target if the Raiders lose impending free-agent RB Michael Bush to free agency and go shopping for a running back in the NFL Draft.

RB | Tiki Barber | Free Agent | Free Agents
Free-agent RB Tiki Barber (Giants) could potentially sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to two sources who stated that Barber would certainly be interested in restarting his career in Pittsburgh, playing for a player-friendly head coach in Mike Tomlin and a franchise that annually is a Super Bowl contender, reports Paul Schwartz, of the New York Post. When asked if Barber has had any negotiations with the Steelers, agent Mark Lepselter said that would be "factually incorrect" and added he has not spoken to any teams about Barber.

RB | Ryan Torain | Washington Redskins | Fantasy
Washington Redskins RB Ryan Torain is expected to get first crack at the starting tailback job, according to head coach Mike Shanahan, reports Gary Fitzgerald, of Redskins.com. Offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said in an interview this week that the key for Train is to stay injury-free for a full 16-game season. "I think Ryan can be very good," Kyle Shanahan said. "He's a very good natural runner. His problem has always been staying healthy. I think that's why you have to help him out with other guys."

RB | Keiland Williams | Washington Redskins | Fantasy
Washington Redskins RB Keiland Williams settled into a third-down back role last season, and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said his value as a blocker on passing downs was "crucial," reports Gary Fitzgerald, of Redskins.com. "He got in a role where he really helped us out on third downs," Shanahan said. "By the end of the year he was the best in terms of helping us in protections, especially after (RB Clinton Portis) went down. We needed Keiland and he did a great job in protections."

RB | Kevin Faulk | New England Patriots | Injury
New England Patriots RB Kevin Faulk (knee) said Wednesday, March 9, that he estimates his right knee to be at about 70 to 75 percent, reports Shalise Manza Young, of The Boston Globe. Faulk tore his anterior cruciate ligament in September, and said he is taking his recovery one stage at a time.

Fitzgerald said Wednesday, March 9, that he is "not really" interested in testing the free-agent market. Fitzgerald is entering the final year of a four-year, $40 million contract he signed in 2008.

Wisconsin OT Gabe Carimi did not back down from his recent boast during the NFL Scouting Combine that he is the best offensive tackle prospect in the NFL Draft, according to the Chicago Tribune. When asked about his comments during Wisconsin's Pro Day Wednesday, March 9, Carimi explained that he wouldn't have said it if he didn't believe it - and said he told the same thing to the handful of teams who asked him about it. "They asked me why I thought that," Carimi said. "They asked me why, and I repeated myself. And most of them said they agreed." Carimi does not think his confidence will do anything but help his draft stock. "I wouldn't see why you wouldn't want a confident player," Carimi said.

He measured a 26-inch vertical jump, an 8-foot-6 broad jump and completed 22 repetitions on the 225-pound bench press.
