"I injured my MCL in the offseason," Martin said. "But the surgery wasn't for the MCL, it was for the meniscus. When they looked at my knee they saw that I had a meniscus issue as well, so in the time it would take for the MCL to heal, the surgery would heal, so they might as well do it. It was just a prevention type thing." Martin still has yet to take part in blocking drills during spring training. With Martin sitting out Saturday, Feb. 26, the likely choices to catch are Cs Francisco Cervelli or Jesus Montero. C Jorge Posada is scheduled to catch his first spring bullpen Thursday, Feb. 24. "It's still a little bit stiff, it's not 100 percent yet," Martin said. "But how it felt the first day compared to now the progression has been really good. This is more a conservative-type thing, to make sure I will be ready. Instead of getting started too early and having a setback and missing the early part of the season, which I do not want to do. I want to be out there from Day 1."

"We're taking a different course of action this year," Wuertz said. "We're acting on it early so that it doesn't become a problem later on."

Updating a previous report, Seattle Mariners RP David Aardsma (hip) is about a week away from throwing, reports Greg Johns, of MLB.com. Aardsma walked without crutches Wednesday, Feb. 23, as he gradually makes his way back from surgery to repair the labrum in his left hip.

Philadelphia Phillies RP Antonio Bastardo (elbow) threw a bullpen session Wednesday, Feb. 23, and he did not report any problems, reports Todd Zolecki, of MLB.com. Bastardo said he threw 30 pitches, and he added that he felt no discomfort or pain in his elbow, which had sidelined him at the beginning of camp.

The Chicago White Sox do not seem to be worried about the closer role now that RP Bobby Jenks is gone and with the Boston Red Sox, according to the Chicago Sun-Times' Joe Cowley. "I would like to do it," RP Matt Thornton said. "I would like the opportunity to do it, and I've earned the right to do that job. I mean, if I go out there and blow three, four games the first few weeks, well, then I don't deserve it. And at the same time, if that's their choice to go with someone else in the closer role, I'm ready to help this team win, whatever it takes." Thornton said the back end of the bullpen will perform better if everyone has defined roles, meaning he is against a closer-by-committee approach.

RPs Sergio Santos and Jesse Crain could also be in the mix. "I don't think I have to prove myself, I've done it for numerous years in a row," Thornton said. "At the same time, I can't go out during spring training and give up a five spot every time I'm on the mound. It's disrespectful to the rest of the team if I'm not prepared and ready to go and I can't get the job done here. I'm not saying if I give up a run I lose my job or I'm throwing long relief. I just want to show I'm prepared and ready to go and I'm healthy."

Updating a previous item, Milwaukee Brewers RP Mark Rogers (shoulder) shut down his throwing session Wednesday, Feb. 23, after he felt tightness in his surgically repaired right shoulder, according to MLB.com's Adam McCalvy. Rogers has been dealing with the injury since the start of spring training. "I did a little extra work (on Tuesday) and I think that's why it's a little tight today. (Structurally), it's all good, thank God. It's not anywhere around where the surgery was, and it's a totally different feeling. I can throw 80 percent, but when I let it go, it's just a little bit tight," Rogers said.
