Updating a previous item, The New York Post reports free-agent 1B Carlos Delgado (hip) wants to play in 2011 if his hip permits. "If I am healthy, I will find a way," Delgado told MLB.com. "I know how to play. I don't want to retire. The reason why I put myself through three surgeries in 18 months is because I want to play. Otherwise, I would have just hung it up."

Contract talks between the St. Louis Cardinals and the agent for 1B Albert Pujols reportedly aren't going well, although discussions have been ongoing, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com.


Second Baseman

Cincinnati Reds OF Drew Stubbs and 2B Brandon Phillips appear to be the favorites to hit leadoff on days when OF Fred Lewis is not in the starting lineup, although Stubbs and Phillips both hit better in other spots in the batting order, according to John Fay of The Cincinnati Enquirer.

It is believed that one of the spots will go to either Nunez or Pena because they are the only two players capable of playing shortstop.

San Francisco Giants 2B Freddy Sanchez (shoulder) is 100 percent confident he'll be in the lineup on Opening Day after offseason left shoulder surgery, reports Andrew Baggarly, of the San Jose Mercury News.

2B | Robinson Cano | New York Yankees | Fantasy
New York Yankees 2B Robinson Cano has hired Scott Boras as his new agent, according to ESPNDeportes.com's Enrique Rojas. Cano was previously represented by agent Bobby Barad.


Shortstop

Boston Red Sox SS Marco Scutaro (neck) is feeling much better but may have to work through his neck injuries for a while, according to ESPNBoston.com's Gordon Edes. "The neck issue I believe is something he will have to manage for the rest of his life, but should not require surgery fortunately. Just the off-season rest, and then therapy and exercise," agent Peter Greenberg said.


Third Baseman

Updating a previous report, San Francisco Giants 3B Pablo Sandoval has trimmed off 30 pounds of fat during the offseason, and he has had several conversation with former Giants OF Barry Bonds about plate discipline, reports Andrew Baggarly, of the San Jose Mercury News. "He told me to throw a punch with my hands at the pitch I'm going to hit," Sandoval said.

3B | Danny Valencia | Minnesota Twins | Fantasy
Minnesota Twins 3B Danny Valencia will be entering Spring Training as the expected starting third baseman, according to MLB.com's Kelly Thesier. "We expect him to take the job and run with it," manager Ron Gardenhire said. "He goes into camp as our third baseman, and I'm pretty sure he's going to leave as our third baseman. He should be fine. I'm looking forward to seeing him out on the field again."

3B | Allen Craig | St. Louis Cardinals | Fantasy
St. Louis Cardinals 3B Allen Craig is currently on a throwing program designed to correct some flaws in his throwing mechanics, according to FOXSportsMidwest.com's B.J. Rains. "He catches the ball with good hands. It's just a question of footwork. I think the first week of spring training (coach) Jose Oquendo made a change with David Freese and made him a better thrower, so that's all potentially there for us," manager Tony La Russa said. Craig is expected to make the team as the backup third baseman and a backup in the outfield.


Catcher

Former New York Yankees C Jim Leyritz is the new pitching coach for the minor league Newark Bears, according to The Associated Press. Cleared in November of criminal charges stemming from a fatal 2007 car collision in Florida, Leyritz will take over the pitching staff of the Can-Am League team for which he once played. The team is managed by Tim Raines, his former Yankees teammate.

The Washington Nationals invited P Josh Wilkie, P Matt Chico, C Derek Norris and C Jhonathan Solano to Spring Training Friday, Feb. 4, according to The Washington Post's Adam Kilgore.


Outfielder

Cincinnati Reds OFs Chris Heisey and Jeremy Hermida are battling for the team's final spot on the bench, according to John Fay of The Cincinnati Enquirer. Heisey tied for the National League lead with four pinch-hit home runs last year but Hermida may have an advantage because he is a left-handed hitter. It is possible that the Reds could wind up with no lefty bats on the bench if Hermida doesn't make the team on days when OF Fred Lewis is in the starting lineup.

Boston Red Sox OF J.D. Drew (hamstring) may not be at full strength at the start of spring training, after having experienced lingering hamstring issues during the offseason, according to Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe.

OF | Justin Christian | San Francisco Giants | Transaction, Fantasy
The San Francisco Giants have agreed to a minor league contract with OF Justin Christian, who last played in the majors in 2008 with the New York Yankees. MLB.com's John Schlegel reports Christian, an outfielder for Mexico in the Caribbean Series, confirmed he signed a contract with the Giants, but the club has not yet announced the deal.

The St. Louis Cardinals signed free-agent OF Jim Edmonds (Reds) to a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training Friday, Feb. 4, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Derrick Goold.

OF | Grady Sizemore | Cleveland Indians | Injury, Fantasy
Cleveland Indians general manager Chris Antonetti said OF Grady Sizemore (knee) will not be shifted to left field when he returns to game action, according to MLB.com's Jordan Bastian. "Right now," Antonetti said, "the thought is center field is actually less demanding on his knees. He may have to cover more ground out there, but he doesn't have to decelerate as quickly as he goes into the wall. Left field and right field, you have to stop more quickly than you do in center." The team is being conservative with Sizemore, and there is still a chance that he could open the season on the disabled list. If he does start on the DL, it would open up a spot for candidates that include OFs Trevor Crowe, Shelley Duncan, Travis Buck, Chad Huffman and Jordan Brown.


Starting Pitcher

Relief Pitcher

Colorado Rockies RP Huston Street could be on the trading block, reports Jim Armstrong of The Denver Post. With RPs like Matt Belisle, Rafael Betancourt and Matt Lindstrom also signed to contracts, the club may be grooming other closer candidates.

Updating previous reports, the Boston Red Sox have agreed to terms with free-agent RP Dennys Reyes (Cardinals) on a minor league contract, according to Alex Speier of WEEI.com. He would make $900,000 if he makes the major league roster, with performance bonuses that could result in the deal being worth as much as $1.4 million.

Free-agent P Kelvim Escobar (Mets) is attempting a comeback as a reliever, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com. He is expected to throw for interested teams in March. Escobar has made one appearance at the major league level since 2007.
