Outfielders

Alfredo Amezaga, Colorado Rockies (signed)

Atlanta Braves SP Mike Minor
Minor inconvenience

The Rockies value versatility. Despite the presence of a couple of players who bring it, none own it like Amezaga, 33, does. He missed most of 2009 and the entire 2010 season because of an early 2009 knee injury that eventually required microfracture surgery, in July 2009. If he has regained strength around the joint, he could become a valuable real-life reserve and deep fantasy pickup. He accumulated more than 1,100 plate appearances from 2006 to 2008 with the Florida Marlins.

Rubi Silva, Chicago Cubs (signed)

This 21-year-old former star of Cuba's junior national team is considered athletic, with a high speed rating and line-drive swing, according to the news report. He hit .276, with 10 triples and four ding dongs, in 283 at-bats in the Serie Nacional. His $1 million signing bonus suggests that there might be a little something worth following here, at least for the long term, in NL leagues. The Cubs' other recent Cuban signee, catcher Yaniel Cabeza, is considered a high-quality defender but doesn't have much of a hitting pedigree.

Pitchers

Rodrigo Lopez, Atlanta Braves (signed)

In 2010, the Arizona Diamondbacks entrusted this right-hander, 35, with 200 innings on the nose. Few clubs choose such an avenue (he also posted a 5.00 ERA, on the dot) willingly. The Bravos no doubt hope to avoid injuries and expect Brandon Beachy or Mike Minor to lay claim to their fifth spot.
