Not only is Saunders recovering from having his appendix removed three weeks ago, but he also suffered a Grade I strain of his right elbow ligament during a collision in the outfield in Venezuela during winter ball. Saunders is set to begin a throwing program this week.

Cincinnati Reds assistant general manager Bill Bavasi said Thursday, Jan. 27, the team is not interested in trading prospect 1B Yonder Alonso, despite the fact they signed 1B Joey Votto to a three-year contract, reports Hal McCoy, of the Dayton Daily News. "We won't trade him," Bavasi said. "We've tried him in the outfield and he gets to the ball he should get to, but he doesn't have the speed to make the great plays. But we can't move him. He is exactly the kind of player (GM) Walt (Jocketty) loves - he hits the ball hard, puts the ball in play, doesn't strike out." Bavasi speculated that Alonso will likely start out at Triple-A Louisville rather than sit the bench with the big club.

New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said CL Francisco Rodriguez (thumb) is expected to report to spring training 100 percent, ESPNNewYork.com's Ian Begley reports. Alderson said trainer Ray Ramirez has checked in with K-Rod periodically throughout the offseason to monitor the health of his thumb. Rodriguez has a vesting option in his contract that states if he finished 55 games in 2011, the Mets will pay him $17.5 million in 2012. "From my standpoint, I hope he gets 55 saves," Alderson said. "And if he does that probably indicates a successful season for the Mets."

"He's doing a lot of therapy work," trainer Rick Griffin said. "And he is doing shoulder exercises. The doctors are saying that he should be ready the second week of the season."
