Quarterback

QB | Eli Manning | New York Giants | Free Agents
New York Giants QB Eli Manning said he would be open to the possibility of the team re-signing free-agent WR Plaxico Burress (Giants) once he is released from prison, reports Ohm Youngmisuk, of ESPNNewYork.com. "We already have a great corps of receivers at this point right now," Manning said. "To throw him into the mix could make us stronger and could be a good thing. If they feel he can help us out and he is committed then I am all for it."

Cecil Newton, father of Auburn QB Cam Newton, is scheduling his son to have a workout in front of the media in San Diego Feb. 10, according to Bruce Feldman, of ESPN The Magazine. Newton has been acclimated to working from under center and throwing in rhythm while improving his footwork. The results have "blown away" his quarterbacks coach George Whitfield, as well as his father. "Cam is ready arm-wise and footwork-wise," Whitfield said. "We've had a heckuva of regimen, but he has really made some giant strides in getting this routine from under center down. His dad is seeing that, and saying let's go public before the (NFL) Combine."

QB | Michael Vick | Philadelphia Eagles | Free Agents
If the Philadelphia Eagles plan to use the franchise tag on pending free-agent QB Michael Vick, it should still be available to them amid the league's labor unrest, according to Jeff McLane, of the Philadelphia Inquirer. "I expect the franchise tag to continue to operate as it has in prior seasons and clubs to be permitted to exercise their rights under the tag," Jeff Pash, the NFL's general counsel, said Thursday, Jan. 27. Without a franchise tag, Vick could become an unrestricted free agent March 4 under the old collective bargaining agreement. A franchise tag would allow the Eagles to retain Vick's rights for next season before a possible lockout. He would earn the average yearly salary of the top five quarterbacks, which would be approximately $16 million. The Eagles and Vick have had casual discussions about a deal, a source close to the situation said. It is unlikely that the Eagles would want to bring Vick back next season as their starting quarterback on a one-year contract.
