Middle infielders

New York Mets SP Chris Young
Young restless to contribute

Willie Bloomquist, Arizona Diamondbacks (signed)

The flexibility of this 33-year-old will come in handy for a club with uninspiring depth. The Snakes aren't in the same boat as Bloomquist's old club, the Kansas City Royals, but the vet could still provide a deep NL club with some steals from its reserves.

Pitchers

Tom Gorzelanny, Washington Nationals (traded from Chicago Cubs)

Chicago was the scene of this southpaw's resurrection. The move to D.C. should aid Gorzelanny's bid to keep his HR/9 under 1.00. Because of tireless inconsistency and a blah BB/9, he's still no more than a below-average NL starter, with occasional acts of brilliance and a decent K/9.

Chris Young, New York Mets (signed)

Young, with the San Diego Padres to close out 2010, made two starts in the minors and three in the majors. If he demonstrates that his shoulder is strong this spring, then he should keep the walks per nine below 4.00 and could post an ERA close to that mark, too. He has always been one of the league's tougher pitchers to hit. Stay tuned, NL gamblers.

Aaron Heilman, Arizona Diamondbacks (re-signed)

Heilman hasn't made a big league start since 2005, but the D-backs will let him compete for a spot in the rotation. The right-hander has been a subpar reliever for three seasons, but stranger things have happened. Arizona's starting five isn't chock full of aces, but don't hold your breath.

Ian Snell, St. Louis Cardinals (signed)

Snell, 29, used to have the ability to pile up K's, but he unraveled three seasons ago while with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Seattle Mariners failed to help him recover. Will Dave Duncan do it? It's at least worth monitoring.
