Seattle Mariners 2B Chone Figgins will move back to third base for the 2011 campaign, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer's Gerry Spratt. "We have talked to Chone about going back to third base and he's well aware of it," general manager Jack Zduriencik said. "His response was, 'Fine, I'll do what is best for the club.'" With Figgins at third, the team's starting infield is set. SS Jack Wilson will be at short, 2B Brendan Ryan is likely to start at second and 1B Justin Smoak will be at first base.


Shortstop

The Cincinnati Reds finalized their one-year, $3 million deal with SS Edgar Renteria Friday, Jan. 7, according to ESPNDeportes.com's Enrique Rojas.


Third Baseman

3B | Chipper Jones | Atlanta Braves | Injury, Fantasy
Atlanta Braves 3B Chipper Jones (knee) was back in the batting cages for the first time Friday, Jan. 7, since undergoing surgery on his knee, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Carroll Rogers. Jones started out with soft toss, with 8-10 swings from each side of the plate. He reached about 85-90 percent intensity in the cages. "I thoroughly expect to be the Opening Day third baseman," said Jones, who also tempers his chances with realism. "But I have days where I go down in the weight room and I think there's no way. But today I feel like that there's no doubt that I'll be the Opening Day third baseman."

3B | Eric Chavez | free agent | Free Agents
The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are not interested in signing free-agent 3B Eric Chavez (Athletics), according to The Orange County Register's Bill Plunkett.

3B | Mark Teahen | Chicago White Sox | Fantasy
Chicago White Sox 3B Brent Morel will receive a chance to win the starting third base job in Spring Training this year, according to MLB.com's Scott Merkin. "They talked to me at the end of the year and said the job would be open to win in Spring Training," said Morel. "By any means, nothing will be handed to me." If he wins the job, Morel will likely hit near the bottom of the lineup. IFs Dayan Viciedo and Mark Teahen are also options at third base.

3B | Zelous Wheeler | Milwaukee Brewers | Transaction
The Milwaukee Brewers signed OF Caleb Gindl, C Anderson Delarosa, OF Logan Schafer and 3B Zelous Wheeler to minor league deals Thursday, Jan. 6, according to The Sports Network.


Catcher

The Tampa Bay have acquired P Chris Archer, OF Brandon Guyer, C Robinson Chirinos, SS Hak-Ju Lee and OF Sam Fuld from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for SP Matt Garza, a minor league pitcher and a minor league outfielder, reports ESPNChicago.com's Bruce Levine.

San Diego Padres RP Heath Bell said he wants a multi-year deal with the team before he is eligible to become a free agent after the 2011 season, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune's Bill Center. "But I also want to stay in San Diego. My family loves it here. I love it here. I'd love to get something done with the Padres that benefits everyone," Bell said.

RP | Andrew Bailey | Oakland Athletics | Injury, Fantasy
Oakland Athletics RP Andrew Bailey (elbow) was recently cleared to begin a throwing program after undergoing elbow surgery last year, according to MLB.com's Jane Lee. Bailey is currently on track to be ready by Opening Day, however, he must first clear multiple hurdles, including throwing from 120 feet pain-free. Bailey threw for the final day at 60 feet Thursday, Jan. 6, and plans to reach 120 feet around Feb. 12. "I'm actually surprised about how good I feel, in terms of my extension," Bailey said. "I was at a negative-25 degree extension before surgery, and I was pitching like that for three years, and now I'm below 10 degrees. I've never seen my arm go that straight, which is a good thing."

RP | Jared Burton | Cincinnati Reds | Transaction
The Cincinnati Reds avoided arbitration with RP Jared Burton Thursday, Jan. 6, by agreeing to a one-year deal, according to MLB.com's Mark Sheldon. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
