Fantasy football busts: QB | RB | WR | TE | PK | DT

In this article KFFL breaks down fantasy football busts of the week. Some high-level players will be included, because you need to know when is time to sit a player even though it may not seem appropriate. Primarily, however, we will address the midrange to low-end fantasy options that you rack your brain over each week. Read on to learn which of these players that you wouldn't want in your lineup.

Note: All statistical averages are from Week 5 to Week 8, unless otherwise specified.

Fantasy football busts: Place kickers

Olindo Mare, Seattle Seahawks vs. New York Giants

Fantasy value: Low-end No. 1

    Seattle Seahawks PK Olindo Mare
    No easy sailing for Mare
  • Mare has averaged 2.67 field goal attempts (2.00 average makes) and has connected on all of his 1.33 extra point tries per game. He has accounted for an average of 7.3 actual kicking points per contest.
  • The Giants have permitted averages of 2.00 extra point attempts and 1.67 field goal tries per game to the position. Kickers have been successful on all of their attempts, resulting in an average of 7.0 actual kicking points per game.
  • New York has had a bye week to prepare for the slumping Seahawks, whose offense has failed to score more than 10 points in three of their last four games.
  • The Seahawks will be without quarterback Matt Hasselbeck (concussion) in Week 9. The offense could stall with Charlie Whitehurst making his first pro start against a fierce New York pass rush.

Nick Folk, New York Jets at Detroit Lions

Fantasy value: Low-end No. 1

  • After a quality run before his Week 7 bye, Folk wasn't able to knock through his only field goal attempt in Week 8 against the Green Bay Packers. Folk's shutout in the fantasy points column probably has owners going away from him. He has averaged 2.33 field goal attempts, making 2.00 per game, and Folk has connected on all of his average 1.67 one-pointers per outing. He has registered 7.7 actual kicking points per game.
  • Detroit has been stout against place kickers, which just sounds funny to say. They have allowed only 1.67 extra point attempts and 1.33 field goal tries per game, all of which have split the uprights. That translates to 5.7 real kicking points per game.
  • The Jets' offense could get back on track this week, but we feel Folk may be kicking more PATs than FGs in Week 9.

NEW - Matt Bryant, Atlanta Falcons vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Fantasy value: No. 1 or bench

  • Bryant had missed two of his six field goal attempts in the three games before Atlanta's Week 8 bye. He has made 14 of 17 on the season.
  • Tampa Bay is giving up only 1.25 field goal attempts per game, which is tied for the fewest in the league. Kickers have been generating points against them mainly through extra points (3.00 per game).
  • Given Tampa Bay's porous run defense, Atlanta shouldn't have a problem punching the ball in with Michael Turner this week. That could again set the stage for plenty of extra points but few three-point tries.
