Quarterback

QB | John Beck | Washington Redskins | Transaction
The Washington Redskins have signed QB John Beck to a two-year, $2.25 million contract extension, reports ESPN's Adam Schefter.

QB | Ben Roethlisberger | Pittsburgh Steelers | Fantasy
Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger plans to ask NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to reduce his six-game suspension by at least three games when the two meet Friday, Sept. 3, reports ESPN's Sal Paolantonio, according to sources. Some in the Roethlisberger camp feel the six-game suspension was too harsh because Roethlisberger was the first player suspended by Goodell who had not been arrested, charged or convicted of a crime. However, some in the camp don't want to anger the commissioner by asking for too much. Team president Arthur Rooney II will also join Roethlisberger for the meeting. Most believe Goodell has planned to lower the suspension to four games all along.

QB | Jay Cutler | Chicago Bears | Fantasy
Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler said the team will be opening up the offense when the regular season starts and expects the offensive line to be ready to protect despite the preseason protection problems, reports Mike Mulligan, of the Chicago Sun-Times. "We're going to open it up. Those guys [on the offensive line] will be expected to make it happen over there. They played a lot better this past game going back and looking at the film. I was a little edgy in the pocket, moving around sometimes. I could have helped them out a little bit. That's what we're learning," Cutler said.

QB | Matt Leinart | Arizona Cardinals | Fantasy
Updating a previous report, the New York Giants are not interested in Arizona Cardinals QB Matt Leinart because they are looking for a veteran quarterback that would be comfortable being the backup, according to FOXSports.com's Jay Glazer.

QB | Jim Sorgi | New York Giants | Injury
New York Giants QB Jim Sorgi (shoulder) appears to be in the team's future plans because head coach Tom Coughlin has asked Sorgi to stay around the team while on Injured Reserve to help with game planning and with the young quarterbacks, reports Ralph Vacchiano, of the New York Daily News.

Running Back

RB | Deji Karim | Jacksonville Jaguars | Injury
Jacksonville Jaguars RB Deji Karim (thumb) is expected to make the team's final roster, speculates Jaguars.com's Vic Ketchman.

RB | Montario Hardesty | Cleveland Browns | Injury
Cleveland Browns RB Montario Hardesty (knee) said he is not worried about his right knee, reports Nate Ulrich, of the Akron Beacon Journal. Hardesty suffered a bone bruise on his right knee on the final day of rookie training camp. It was the same knee he suffered a torn ACL in during college. Hardesty said, "'I'm really not even worried about the knee or anything like that. I've been running around, and I've had a little contact here and there."

RB | Derrick Ward | Free Agent | Free Agents
The St. Louis Rams do not appear interested in unrestricted free-agent RB Derrick Ward (Buccaneers) because he has not looked good during the preseason, according to Jim Thomas, of St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

RB | Kevin Smith | Detroit Lions | Injury, Fantasy
Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz indicated that RB Kevin Smith (knee) is not guaranteed a spot on the final roster, reports Carlos Monarrez, of the Detroit Free Press. "I don't know," Schwartz said. "I'll cross that bridge when we get there. I don't know that there's very many people that have 100 percent earned a spot." Smith has not shown explosiveness during the preseason and is averaging only 2.4 yards per carry. Schwartz said he wants to see Smith have more trust in his knee while on the field.

Wide Receiver

WR | David Clowney | New York Jets | Fantasy
New York Jets WR David Clowney is on the bubble for making the final team, and head coach Rex Ryan wants to see some more consistency from him on special teams, reports the New York Daily News' Kevin Armstrong. "He's made some plays on special teams, but we want to see that consistency," Ryan said. "So far he's still a little inconsistent in special-teams play." Ryan and special teams coordinator Mike Westhoff have said Clowney, who has been used as a gunner in the preseason, needs to stop being broken down by the single press. Ryan praised Clowney's ability to recover fumbles, though he wanted to see more speed on the field. Clowney also offers explosiveness as a wide receiver on go routes and straight sprints.

WR | Donte' Stallworth | Baltimore Ravens | Injury
Baltimore Ravens OT Jared Gaither (back), WR Mark Clayton (concussion), WR Donte' Stallworth (foot), DL Terrence Cody (knee), OT David Hale (tailbone), OG Daniel Sanders (shoulder) and SS Marcus Paschal (leg) are out of the team's preseason finale, according to Jamison Hensley, of The Baltimore Sun.

WR | Mark Clayton | Baltimore Ravens | Injury
Baltimore Ravens OT Jared Gaither (back), WR Mark Clayton (concussion), WR Donte' Stallworth (foot), DL Terrence Cody (knee), OT David Hale (tailbone), OG Daniel Sanders (shoulder) and SS Marcus Paschal (leg) are out of the team's preseason finale, according to Jamison Hensley, of The Baltimore Sun.

WR | T.J. Houshmandzadeh | Seattle Seahawks | Fantasy
Seattle Seahawks WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh led the team in receiving last season, but former NFL QB Brock Huard speculated on ESPN 710 AM that Houshmandzadeh might no longer fit, reports Danny O'Neil, of The Seattle Times. Houshmandzadeh is ideally a slot receiver and if he doesn't buy into that role, the team could consider moving on. Houshmandzadeh is targeted more frequently now in the passing game, but he is not as productive after the catch as a result.

WR | Devin Thomas | Washington Redskins | Fantasy
Washington Redskins WR Devin Thomas was in a good position to make the final roster cuts, Saturday, Sept. 4, but he has yet to be told he'll make the team, reports The Washington Post's Jason Reid. In the team's third preseason game Friday Aug. 27, when starters typically play more, Thomas didn't play a single snap as a receiver. Head coach Mike Shanahan said he wasn't able to spread the ball around enough to get Thomas in, and he wanted to wait until the team's final preseason game Thursday, Sept. 2, to see him. Thomas has four catches for 78 yards this preseason and is one of only two Washington receivers that have caught a touchdown pass.

WR | Antonio Bryant | Free Agent | Injury, Free Agents, Fantasy
Unrestricted free-agent WR Antonio Bryant (knee) will meet with a specialist this week to determine when he may be able to return from his knee injury, reports NFL Network's Jason La Canfora. Bryant's agent said Bryant has made progress in his recovery, but there is no timetable until he meets with the doctor.

WR | Roy Williams | Dallas Cowboys | Injury
Dallas Cowboys WR Roy Williams (hip, back) should be ready for the start of the regular season even though he likely will not play in final preseason game with a hip flexor and a sore back, reports Rob Phillips, of DallasCowboys.com.

WR | Dez Bryant | Dallas Cowboys | Injury, Fantasy
Dallas Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones said WR Dez Bryant (ankle) will not play in the team's final preseason Thursday, Sept. 2, in part because the first-team offense will not play in the game, reports Todd Archer, of The Dallas Morning News.

Tight End

TE | Greg Olsen | Chicago Bears | Fantasy
Chicago Bears apparently still have TE Greg Olsen on the trading block, a source told Mike Mulligan, of the Chicago Sun-Times. The Bears look to be reluctant to trade Olsen for less than a second-round or third-round draft choice but his market value at this point is around a fifth-round draft choice. Olsen could get traded because the Bears would have had to use TE Brandon Manumaleuna as an extra blocker with OT Chris Williams' struggling. One thing that could hurt a trade is that Olsen is friends with QB Jay Cutler.

Place Kicker

PK | Jason Hanson | Detroit Lions | Injury
Detroit Lions PK Jason Hanson (knee) is expected to play in the team's final preseason game, reports Carlos Monarrez, of the Detroit Free Press. He is coming off knee surgery he had during training camp.

Offensive Tackle

OT | Jared Gaither | Baltimore Ravens | Injury
Baltimore Ravens OT Jared Gaither (back), WR Mark Clayton (concussion), WR Donte' Stallworth (foot), DL Terrence Cody (knee), OT David Hale (tailbone), OG Daniel Sanders (shoulder) and SS Marcus Paschal (leg) are out of the team's preseason finale, according to Jamison Hensley, of The Baltimore Sun.

OT | Tyler Polumbus | Seattle Seahawks | Transaction
Updating a previous report, the Seattle Seahawks acquired OT Tyler Polumbus from the Detroit Lions for an undisclosed draft choice, reports MLive.com's Tom Kowalski. The draft choice is probably in the seventh round. The Seahawks did place a waiver claim on Polumbus when he was waived.

OT | Oniel Cousins | Baltimore Ravens | Injury
Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said he hopes OT Oniel Cousins (concussion) will be able to play in the team's final preseason game Thursday, Sept. 2, according to BaltimoreRavens.com's Ryan Mink. Cousins has not played in the previous two preseason games because of a concussion, and Harbaugh wants Cousins to get some snaps.

Defensive Line

DL | Terrence Cody | Baltimore Ravens | Injury
Baltimore Ravens OT Jared Gaither (back), WR Mark Clayton (concussion), WR Donte' Stallworth (foot), DL Terrence Cody (knee), OT David Hale (tailbone), OG Daniel Sanders (shoulder) and SS Marcus Paschal (leg) are out of the team's preseason finale, according to Jamison Hensley, of The Baltimore Sun.

DL | Darnell Dockett | Arizona Cardinals | Transaction, Fantasy
The Arizona Cardinals have signed DT Darnell Dockett to a contract extension. He is now under contract through the end of 2015. Financial terms were not disclosed.

DL | David Bowens | Cleveland Browns | Injury
Cleveland Browns LB David Bowens (knee) said he is not sure that he will make the team's final roster after missing time during the preseason because of swelling in his knee, according to Mary Kay Cabot, of The Cleveland Plain Dealer. Bowen was used in the fourth quarter of the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 28, and said it was difficult to take since he has not played at the end of a preseason game in a while.

Linebacker

LB | Jason Taylor | New York Jets | Fantasy
New York Jets LB Jason Taylor will be used in a full-time role instead of as a situational player with LB Calvin Pace (foot) out, reports the New York Daily News' Kevin Armstrong.

LB | Vernon Gholston | New York Jets | Injury, Fantasy
New York Jets LB Vernon Gholston has shown improvement this preseason and will split time between defensive end and linebacker with LB Calvin Pace (foot) out, reports the New York Daily News' Kevin Armstrong.

LB | Julian Peterson | Detroit Lions | Free Agents
Detroit Lions LB Julian Peterson could have a hard time surpassing the 4.5 sacks he had last year, according to Dave Birkett, of the Detroit Free Press. Peterson is playing a different role on third downs this year. Used as a rush end in many passing situations last year, Peterson is now dropping into coverage as a nickel linebacker. The Lions made the switch after upgrading their defensive line by drafting DL Ndamukong Suh, trading for DL Corey Williams and signing DL Kyle Vanden Bosch as a free agent.

LB | Jonathan Vilma | New Orleans Saints | Injury
New Orleans Saints LB Jonathan Vilma (groin) will sit out the team's preseason game Thursday, Sept. 2, but he will not need surgery to repair a groin injury, reports Les East, of The Advocate. Head coach Sean Payton was optimistic that Vilma would practice Sunday, Sept. 5. Payton added, "We knew before he flew out this morning that the type of injury he had was not going to be a sports hernia surgery. It's really more the lower abductor groin area. The key was just having another set of eyes on it to confirm what we found and basically set the plan in place for the rehab."

LB | Channing Crowder | Miami Dolphins | Injury
Miami Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano said LB Channing Crowder (undisclosed) will not play in the team's final preseason game and the team is not sure when Crowder will be able to return, according to Ben Volin, of the Palm Beach Post.

Cornerback

CB | Will D. Allen | Miami Dolphins | Injury
Miami Dolphins CB Will D. Allen (knee) is appearing less likely to be ready for the team's Week 1 game, reports Mike Berardino, of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

CB | Adam Jones | Cincinnati Bengals | Injury
Cincinnati Bengals CB Adam Jones (neck, knee) will not play in the team's final preseason game Thursday, Sept. 2, so he can get extra time to heal his neck and knee injuries, reports Joe Reedy, of The Cincinnati Enquirer. Head coach Marvin Lewis said Jones' injuries are not serious.

CB | Aaron Ross | New York Giants | Injury
New York Giants CB Aaron Ross (foot) had a cast removed from his foot Sunday, Aug. 29, and is still rehabbing from his plantar fasciitis injury, reports Ralph Vacchiano, of the New York Daily News.

Free Safety

FS | Ed Reed | Baltimore Ravens | Injury
New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said he believes Baltimore Ravens FS Ed Reed (hip) will be ready to face the Jets in Week 1, according to Mike Preston, of The Baltimore Sun. "Somebody asked me about Ed Reed saying, 'You know Ed Reed hasn't practiced,'" Ryan said. "I said, guys, Ed Reed will play this game. Now he might not play the second game, third game or fourth game, whatever, but Ed Reed is going to play this game. I think part of that is a respect thing. He knows how disappointed I would be if he didn't play. I want to win the game, but I want to play against Ed. I want them at their best and I know they will be."
