In fantasy baseball, the closer position remains volatile. Rarely does every closer hang on to the job for an entire season - injuries, poor performance and managerial decisions can cloud a team's bullpen picture.

Should you be concerned about a struggling stopper? Which relievers are climbing the depth chart? Are any injuries popping up? KFFL.com's Fantasy Baseball Closer Hot Seat keeps you informed when you're looking for saves.

Mound meetings

  • Baltimore Orioles RP Alfredo Simon
Game over for Simon? DL likely
The Baltimore Orioles likely will go with Will Ohman as their main ninth-inning option with Alfredo Simon (hamstring) expected to hit the DL and Mike Gonzalez (shoulder) still on his way back. Ohman hasn't surrendered a run in 14 2/3 innings this year; he has 15 K's and a 1.23 WHIP in that stretch. The lefty specialist is not an outstanding option, but he's your best bet for saves if desperate.
The O's are also expected to call up Frank Mata. The 26-year-old righty has a 1.86 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and eight saves in 18 appearances (19 1/3 innings) for Triple-A Norfolk. He doesn't strike out many batters (6.52 K/9 in '10), and this year's workload was his first above Double-A.
Still, closing options are slim enough in the Baltimore bullpen that you'll want to throw the bulky Mata on your watch list in deep mixed and AL-only. Remember, though, that he might not be up for long.
  • The Chicago White Sox's Matt Thornton threw a scoreless seventh inning yesterday. He struck out two. The lefty faced only one batter last week - a walk on May 22 - after battling some left triceps soreness the previous weekend. That soreness appears over.
  • We mentioned the Tampa Bay Rays' Joaquin Benoit here and here last week. Over the weekend, Benoit struck out another three batters in one inning, running his consecutive strikeout streak to nine. If you haven't already, add him in deep mixed and AL-only.
