Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said the team held QB Matthew Stafford back last season, reports Carlos Monarrez, of the Detroit Free Press. Schwartz said, "Matt was a lot further along than we were offensively. There were things that he could do that we didn't have other pieces around him to be able to do. Everything that we have in our offense (now) he did at some point last year. It wasn't that we had to get him up to speed. It was more getting everything else up to speed around him. He had that flexibility last year. It's nothing new for him. Probably be a little bit more opportunity but nothing different."

QB | Brett Favre | Minnesota Vikings | Injury, Fantasy
Minnesota Vikings QB Brett Favre (ankle) underwent arthroscopic surgery on his injured left ankle Friday, May 21, several sources told ESPN.com's Chris Mortensen. Dr. James Andrews cleaned up scar tissue and other elements of the joint to allow Favre a better range of motion, according to sources. A source said Favre would likely need four to six weeks of rehabilitation before beginning a running program that would put him on schedule to report to training camp "either at the beginning of camp or shortly thereafter."

Arizona Cardinals general manager Rod Graves said the team is not looking to add another quarterback at this time, according to NFL.com's Steve Wyche. Graves said the team has not contacted unrestricted free-agent QB Marc Bulger (Rams).

QB | JaMarcus Russell | Free Agent | Free Agents
Unrestricted free-agent QB JaMarcus Russell (Raiders) has gone to Arizona to working on losing weight before looking to sign with a team, sources told Yahoo! Sports' Jason Cole. Russell currently weighs more than 300 pounds and is looking to lose at least 25 pounds before trying to sign. Russell has also decided not to do interviews with anyone at this time. Russell is expected to work on improving his mechanics that have been a struggle the last few seasons. "It's so bad that his mechanics are even completely screwed up," a source close to Russell said. "There's stuff they go over in high school that he hasn't worked on the past three years."


Running Back

Unrestricted free-agent RB Brian Westbrook (Eagles) likely will sign with a team within the next week because the belief is all of the teams interested in him would like him to take part in their June minicamp, reports Jason La Canfora, of NFL Network.

For me, the track record wasn't there. But I feel positive and optimistic, after conversations with him and what we've done on the field, that I'll continue to have a big role in our offense like I have had the last couple of years. I don't see that changing."
