While the Carolina Panthers are in need of a quarterback in the NFL Draft and some reports have tied them to Texas QB Colt McCoy, Charles Chandler, of The Charlotte Observer, reports the Panthers have more pressing needs at defensive line, wide receiver and cornerback. As a result, they may not be in a position to select McCoy.

QB | Kyle Orton | Denver Broncos | Draft, Fantasy
With the selection of QB Tim Tebow in the first round of the NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos do not appear inclined to sign QB Kyle Orton to a long-term extension, writes Mike Klis, of The Denver Post. Orton will likely be give the first chance to start in 2010, but he will be playing out a one-year contract for the second year in a row.

The Denver Broncos could go with QB Kyle Orton as their starter in 2010, Brady Quinn as their starter in 2011 and look to move rookie QB Tim Tebow into the starting lineup in 2012 and beyond, reports Mike Klis, of The Denver Post. Orton is on the final year of his deal, Quinn has two years remaining at an affordable $700,000 per season, and such a move would allow Tebow time to adjust to the NFL.

QB | Jimmy Clausen | NFL Draft Prospect | Draft
The Minnesota Vikings are believed to be a virtual lock to select a quarterback with the 34th overall pick in the NFL Draft, writes Chris Brown, of BuffaloBills.com. Many believe they will take Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen. If another team wants to make sure they are able to land a quarterback of their choice, they would have to work out a deal with the St. Louis Rams, who own the 33rd overall pick in the NFL Draft.

QB | J.P. Losman | Oakland Raiders | Draft
The Buffalo Bills have only drafted two quarterbacks during the first round in the history of their franchise - QB Jim Kelly (1983) and QB J.P. Losman (2004) - reports Chuck Pollock, of The Olean Times Herald.

QB | Brett Favre | Minnesota Vikings | Injury, Fantasy
Former NFL head coach Steve Mariucci said during a radio interview that he talked to Minnesota Vikings QB Brett Favre a few days ago and that Favre is still not sure if he will play in 2010, reports Minneapolis Star Tribune's Judd Zulgad. Mariucci said Favre is still bothered by the ankle injury he suffered in the NFC Championship game.


Running Back

Detroit Lions rookie RB Jahvid Best said he brings a "home-run ability" to the Lions' offense, reports Tom Kowalski, of Mlive.com. "I can definitely make a big play out of anything. I'm a complete back. I can run, I can block and I can catch out of the backfield. I'm a new weapon to the weapons they already have," Best said.

RB | Ryan Mathews | San Diego Chargers | Fantasy
San Diego Chargers rookie RB Ryan Mathews was a big fan of former Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson while growing up and even wore No. 21 in high school and college to honor Tomlinson, reports Kevin Acee, of The San Diego Union-Tribune. Now, Mathews has the task of filling Tomlinson's shoes in the Chargers' offense. "It's hard. You can't fill shoes like that. ... There is a lot of pressure, especially after LT ... I have to go in with my own mindset and play ball. I think I play good under pressure," Mathews said. The Chargers gave up a lot to get him, but head coach Norv Turner said everyone will understand why when they see him play. "There was some talk about Houston (selecting him), and it started to scare me," Mathews said. "I'm lucky and blessed (the Chargers) traded up, and I'm super excited." General manager A.J. Smith said he feels Mathews is a "championship-level back" and the team wasn't going to sit around hoping he would fall to them.

RB | C.J. Spiller | Buffalo Bills | Fantasy
Buffalo Bills general manager Buddy Nix said rookie RB C.J. Spiller is a playmaker, able to create field position and score points, according to Chris Brown, of BuffaloBills.com. "He can help us in so many ways," Nix said. "I'm excited about giving a guy like this to Chan Gailey and see what he can do with him. He'll use him in a lot of different spots. He'll be creative with ways to get him the ball." Spiller was described by Nix as a hybrid type back. "I think you compare him to (Reggie) Bush and (Percy) Harvin. He's that kind of dynamic player that can hurt you in a lot of ways," Nix said. Nix also compared him to Tennessee Titans RB Chris Johnson. "He's the same size as Chris Johnson and (Johnson's) just a fuzz faster. Chris Johnson gained 2,000 yards, he had to get some of it inside (running)," Nix noted. Spiller said he is not concerned with what his role is or how many passes he catches, he just wants to help the Bills win a Super Bowl.

Wide Receiver

The Dallas Cowboys will not be trading WR Roy Williams, reports Todd Archer, of The Dallas Morning News. "We won't be moving Roy," team owner Jerry Jones said. The Cowboys have already paid Williams a $9.5 million bonus and he is set to make $3.45 million in base salary. Jones also said Williams will be the starter opposite Miles Austin in 2010, despite the team selecting WR Dez Bryant in the first round of the NFL Draft.

Denver Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels said rookie WR Demaryius Thomas was graded highly by the team all spring long and he was higher on their draft board than WR Dez Bryant, who was later selected by the Dallas Cowboys. McDaniels said Thomas has some unique traits and skills. "He's a smart kid, we spent a lot of time with him - I spent a lot of time with him personally. He understands our system, our offense and what we've asked our receivers to learn. I think that's a thing that he can process and allows him to get on the field and contribute to our team," McDaniels said. He noted having Thomas on board allows them to do some different things because of his size, as it will allow them to create some matchup problems for defenses.

WR | Golden Tate | NFL Draft Prospect | Draft
Notre Dame WR Golden Tate said he compares his style of play to that of Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith and Minnesota Vikings WR Percy Harvin. Tate said when he gets his first NFL playbook he plans to learn every wide receiver position to help whichever team drafts him any way he can. He said he wants the coaching staff to have confidence in him regardless of the receiver position.

Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said the team did not have any hesitation selecting TE Jermaine Gresham (knee) during the first round of the NFL Draft despite his previous knee injury, according to Bengals.com. "He will be completely ready to go. So there was basically no hesitation whatsoever, medically," Lewis said. Gresham said his knee is 100 percent recovered and he is ready to go. Offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski said Gresham gives the team another option in the passing game. "He has the size, the speed and the ability to catch the ball. He gives us another weapon in this physical division we play in," Bratkowski said.

The Cincinnati Bengals may bring free-agent TE Reggie Kelly back to serve as a mentor to the team's younger tight ends, reports Bengals.com. Offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski said that door may still be open.

Miami Dolphins rookie DL Jared Odrick, who they selected in the first round, is expected to compete with DEs Phillip Merling and Kendall Langford for playing time, reports ESPN.com's Tim Graham. He is a strong run defender and be disruptive in the passing lanes.

New York Giants DL Osi Umenyiora is not going to be traded, Giants general manager Jerry Reese said during an interview on SIRIUS NFL Radio.

Updating a previous report, the Tennessee Titans have agreed to terms with restricted free-agent DT Tony Brown on a three-year deal worth $17 million, according to the National Football Post's Aaron Wilson. The deal includes $7.5 million in the first year.


Defensive End

DE | Jason Pierre-Paul | New York Giants | Draft
New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese said the selection of DE Jason Pierre-Paul in the first round of the NFL Draft was an easy choice for them, reports Michael Eisen, of Giants.com. "We think the guy has the biggest upside of any player in the draft," Reese said. The Giants believe one of the keys to returning to the playoffs is improving their pass rush this year. Pierre-Paul will be given a chance to contribute immediately. Head coach Tom Coughlin said he expects Pierre-Paul to pick up the defensive schemes quickly. Pierre-Paul, by the way, will sport the No. 90 jersey.


Linebacker

Atlanta Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff said rookie LB Sean Weatherspoon was the player the team had targeted all along in the first round of the NFL Draft. "In our minds, he is a guy that is going to be a four-down player for us," Dimitroff said.

Updating a previous item, the Miami Dolphins acquired the No. 28 overall pick, a second-round pick (No. 40 overall), a fourth-round pick (no. 126 overall) and LB Tim Dobbins from the San Diego Chargers in exchange for the No. 12 overall pick, a fourth-round pick (No. 110 overall) and a sixth-round draft pick (No. 173 overall), according to the Miami Herald's Jeff Darlington.


Defensive Back

New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum said he feels like the team has the depth at cornerback they wanted by drafting CB Kyle Wilson in the first round of the NFL Draft and previously trading for CB Antonio Cromartie. Head coach Rex Ryan said Wilson will be the team's nickel back, compete for their punt return job and possibly contribute on special teams. "This is a guy that we drafted in the first round, and this is a guy that will play," Ryan noted.
