Catchers

Yorvit Torrealba, San Diego Padres (signed)

The former Colorado Rockies backstop will back up Nick Hundley, which is a reserve position that lends itself to a little more potential PT than most. It doesn't hurt that he's an OK hitter, but he has no power and isn't more than a low-end No. 2 in NL affairs.

First basemen

Mike Jacobs, New York Mets (signed to minor league deal)

Intriguing situation

The aggressive slugger returns to his original organization with the same skills, including no hope for batting average respectability. The signing raises a little concern for Daniel Murphy's value.

If Jacobs wins a share of the platoon at first, he warrants more than an end-game bid. The Mets are desperate for pop, and counting stats don't come cheaply, unless you can get them cheaply....

Outfielders

Brian Giles, Los Angeles Dodgers (signed to minor league deal)

Giles has virtually no path to playing time. Maybe he could be viable in NL games again if he had it, but age is far from on his side. His presence more likely seals the fate of first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz.

Jason Pridie, New York Mets (claimed off waivers from Minnesota Twins)

The Mets have made it customary to bring in players whose ceiling is fourth outfielder. Pridie has a little speed but a lot of competition for at-bats within the organization and should be ignored for the time being.

Pitchers

Todd Wellemeyer, San Francisco Giants (signed to minor league deal)

San Fran will let Wellemeyer compete for the fifth rotation spot, but something tells us they'd prefer that Madison Bumgarner hang on to it. If the Giants trade Jonathan Sanchez, which seems unlikely but is still possible, Wellemeyer is a candidate to fill that hole. He's not worth a bid regardless.

Hisanori Takahashi, New York Mets (agreed to terms)

This lefty can start or relieve, and he'll reportedly have a shot at the final spot in the rotation. Takahashi throws five pitches, his calling card apparently a screwball.

He posted a solid dominance rate in Japan, but like it hasn't for other imports, that probably won't translate in the U.S. The Mets have only one other definite southpaw in the bullpen, which could indicate where he'll end up. No need to do anything more than wait and see.
