Even if you do not need a player, you can tuck him away for depth or block others from adding him to their fantasy football team.

Fantasy football free agents: One-week plays

The following fantasy football pickups are for those who need injury or bye week replacements. They are not players you immediately acquire - unless your team is in dire straights. Some have, however, shown some life and should be followed in case they materialize as options beyond their temporary use.

Donald Brown, Indianapolis Colts (41 percent)

Well, it didn't take them long to reincorporate the rook. We saw how the Colts rested their studs. Now that they have that dreaded loss, look for them to do the same in Week 17, meaning the powerful Brown can grab another 15-carry day if he replaces Joseph Addai. Indy faces the wretched Buffalo Bills.

Sammy Morris and Fred Taylor, New England Patriots (74 percent, 80 percent)

Laurence Maroney lost another fumble - another near the goal line. Now, predicting Bill Belichick's backfield management is unwise to do this late in the season, but Morris has been lingering in the utilizations column this year. If Maroney stays in the doghouse, Morris and the returning Taylor may remain because of their ball security. Morris' reception ability would make him the first flex target.

Lex Hilliard, Miami Dolphins vs. Pittsburgh Steelers (93 percent)

If Ricky Williams' (shoulder) keeps him out for some or all of Miami's Week 17 game, Hilliard would slide right in like he did in Week 16 (nine catches for 74 yards with two total touchdowns). Miami has a tough matchup, but in point-per-reception leagues, he could help in a similar fashion if quarterback Chad Henne feels the heat.

Freddy T may be of use in Week 17

Brandon Jackson, Green Bay Packers at Arizona Cardinals (96 percent)

We're not just talking about his surprise three-touchdown affair. The Pack has nothing else to play for, except a seed. They probably won't risk a major injury to Ryan Grant. Jackson can catch the ball and has a solid matchup against a Cards team that has weakened against the position of late. Ahman Green will probably see some, too, but don't let him chase you away from Jackson if you're desperate in PPR.

Mike Tolbert, San Diego Chargers vs. Washington Redskins (99 percent)

The Bolts already throw in Tolbert several times per game. LaDainian Tomlinson might not play much in a meaningless Week 17. Darren Sproles should resume his typical changeup role, but sans LT Tolbert should see ample short-yardage work, along with Jacob Hester. We like Tolbert's versatility more if you need to pick between the big backs. The hapless 'Skins offer a friendly fantasy doormat, too.

Chris Ogbonnaya, St. Louis Rams vs. San Francisco 49ers (99 percent)

Steven Jackson (back) was a somewhat surprising inactive in Week 16. Ogbonnaya carried the ball rather effectively (nine totes, 45 yards) and is the most effective short-yardage option without Jackson. Only the RB-desperate need apply here, though if you own Jackson, you might as well pull the one-week handcuff in case the Rams decide against letting the eager S-Jax play again.
