Quarterback

QB | Michael Vick | Free Agent | Free Agency News
Darin Gantt, of the Rock Hill Herald, reports the Carolina Panthers are not expected to be interested in unrestricted free-agent QB Michael Vick (Falcons). Some of the team's influential football personnel believed Vick was one of the most talented running backs in the league but not a good quarterback.

QB | Brett Favre | Free Agent | Free Agency News
ESPN.com reports free-agent QB Brett Favre (Jets) continues to wrestle with a decision on whether to come out of retirement and play for the Minnesota Vikings, agent Bus Cook told ESPN's Rachel Nichols Monday, July 27. At issue for Favre is whether he's really up to the mental and physical requirements of a long season in which he'll turn 40 years old. The quarterback's friends and family say they are leaving this decision solely up to him and will be supportive no matter which way he goes.

QB | Matt Hasselbeck | Seattle Seahawks | Injury News
Peter King, of SI.com, reports Seattle Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck (back) is currently eight pounds lighter than he was a season ago. Hasselbeck currently weighs 234 pounds. Hasselbeck has been working out more this offseason and is convinced his back will not be an issue this season. "I'm not worried about my back at all,'' Hasselbeck said. "The only thing my back cannot do is sit in a three-hour run-game-install meeting without getting up and moving around. Of the things I'm worried about - new coach, new offense, some new teammates - I can promise you that health is not one of them.''

QB | Joe Flacco | Baltimore Ravens | Fantasy
Jamison Hensley, of The Baltimore Sun, reports Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco will report to training camp Monday, July 27. Joe Cool will have all eyes on him after a successful rookie season, but the bar will also be raised. "If you're not motivated by yourself at this level, you're not going to be successful," Flacco said. A year ago, offensive coordinator Cam Cameron would stand behind Flacco and tell him the plays. This year, Flacco has been running the no-huddle offense on his own. One of his goals this year is to raise his completion percentage, where he ranked 20th in the league last year. Another focus is throwing over the middle, where he had a 47.4 quarterback rating last season.

QB | Derek Anderson | Cleveland Browns | Depth Chart Tidbit
Marla Ridenour, of The Akron Beacon Journal, reports Cleveland Browns QB Derek Anderson has to show better touch on short passes and improve on his swing passes to running backs. He also has to recapture his 2007 chemistry with WR Braylon Edwards in order to win the team's starting quarterback job, which he is battling for with QB Brady Quinn. Quinn looked to be a dink-and-dunk passer during May and June minicamps, but that could favor a ball-control style offense. Head coach Eric Mangini said the offense will be skewed depending on who wins the starting job.

QB | Matthew Stafford | Detroit Lions | Depth Chart Tidbit, Fantasy
Tom Kowalski, of MLive.com, reports Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz recently stressed the point that fans should not get too far ahead of themselves when it comes to rookie QB Matthew Stafford. Schwartz warned Stafford has a lot to learn, is a rookie, has to deal with training camp, preseason games and more. However, the reality is Stafford is on the fast track to start Week 1 as the team's No. 1 quarterback. He has passed every test with flying colors so far. Schwartz is warning of caution because the season is still seven weeks away and anything can happen. According to Kowalski, people in the organization believe Stafford is even better than they thought when they took him No. 1 overall. Now the big question will come down to whether Stafford is able to be the best quarterback during training camp. Stafford, by the way, will be taking No. 2 reps when the team opens training camp.

Rich Cimini, of The New York Daily News, reports New York Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer said the team's battle at quarterback is going to be a heavyweight title fight. QBs Mark Sanchez and Kellen Clemens are about to compete for the starting duties. "Hopefully, it'll be easy for us and easy for the fans to figure out the winner," Schottenheimer said. Jets head coach Rex Ryan has no qualms about starting a rookie. How well Sanchez grasps the offense will go a long way in determining his fate. Schottenheimer would like the offense to revert to the 2006 offense, which used a myriad of formations, shifts and personnel packages to keep opponents off balance.

QB | Aaron Rodgers | Green Bay Packers | Fantasy
Bob McGinn, of The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, reports Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin said the team expects QB Aaron Rodgers to play better during his sophomore year as a starter. "He's got to play better. No doubt about it," Philbin said. Philbin said the team was kind of paper champions in a lot of regards offensively last year. He noted they stunk on opening drives, and did not play well during the two-minute drill. RB | Leon Washington | New York Jets | Fantasy
Rich Cimini, of The New York Daily News, reports New York Jets RB Leon Washington said the Jets can avoid putting pressure on their quarterback position by running the football better in 2009. "My take is run the ball and we won't have to pass," Washington said. "I say that jokingly. The key is not to put the pressure on one guy. ... As an offense, we want to prove we don't need a quarterback because we're a good running team."
