Pros: The Giants' pressure-based 4-3 defense slipped a few notches last season without defensive end Osi Umenyiora (knee) but was still a solid fantasy option. Led by Pro Bowl defensive end Justin Tuck (12.0 sacks), New York finished 2008 ranked No. 6 in sacks (42), No. 5 in scoring (18.4 points allowed per game), No. 9 versus the run and No. 8 against the pass. A healthy Umenyiora (13 sacks from 2007) will elevate an already lethal pass rush. The Giants upgraded with two new starters: defensive tackle Chris Canty and linebacker Michael Boley. To guarantee scheme continuity, veteran linebackers coach Bill Sheridan was promoted to defensive coordinator, replacing Steve Spagnuolo (head coach, St. Louis Rams).

Cons: Umenyiora may start slowly. New York's forced turnover numbers have dropped three seasons in a row, bottoming out at a below-average 22 takeaways in 2008 (17 interceptions and five recovered fumbles). The kickoff and punt return units are nothing special. Boley will miss the first game of the year after violating the league's personal conduct policy. The Giants' defense is chock full of injuries: cornerback Aaron Ross (hamstring), defensive tackle Jay Allford (knee), defensive tackle Chris Canty (hamstring), linebacker Danny Clark (chin), linebacker Antonio Pierce (foot) and free safety Kenny Phillips (knee) - all hurt to varying degrees.

Fantasy tip: With a boost from Umenyiora and some talented new faces, the already loaded Giants could return to their 2007 elite status - despite facing their usually challenging schedule and rash of injuries. Fantasy owners are targeting New York in the 11th round, on average. If sacks carry increase value in your league, this would be a good spot for them, but don't reach too far for a defensive unit.
