Pros: New head coach Rex Ryan is one of the NFL's best high-pressure 3-4 scheme masterminds. He has inherited an outstanding collection of veteran and young talent that includes two Pro Bowlers: defensive tackle Kris Jenkins and cornerback Darrelle Revis (five interceptions). Already using Ryan's preferred 3-4 alignment, New York finished 2008 ranked No. 7 in sacks (41) while amassing an impressive 30 takeaways (14 interceptions and 16 recovered fumbles). "Gang Green" also compiled seven defensive touchdowns (tied for the league lead) and ranked No. 7 against the run. The Jets will suit up four new starter-material players: linebacker Bart Scott, defensive end Marques Douglas, safety Jim Leonhard and cornerback Lito Sheppard, though Sheppard will probably have to compete with Dwight Lowery for that spot. Speedy Pro Bowl running back/returner Leon Washington is one of the NFL's best.

Cons: Ryan faces two glaring problems: The Jets finished No. 18 in scoring (22.2 points allowed per game) and No. 29 against the pass last season, which hurt their fantasy consistency. This unit may receive inconsistent support from an offense that is transitioning at quarterback. Defensive end/linebacker Vernon Gholston, their 2008 first-round draft choice, was a bust last season and may not fit into Ryan's scheme.

Fantasy tip: The work-in-progress Jets defense has been among the first half dozen units to come off the board, so fantasy owners apparently think Ryan's "reclamation project" will go quickly, despite a challenging schedule. Early-season growing pains are a strong possibility. Owners are generally targeting New York in the mid-12th round, but you may be able to wait on them.
